What is a Photomarathon?

Don't worry, no running involved!
The event is a day to challenge you to think creatively, meet new people and have some fun. Each entrant will receive a disposable camera and the topics to capture. The subjects must be taken in the order which they are provided. Only one picture can be taken to represent each topic.

Registration

All participants are to meet on 16th May 2009, at Photographique (Baldwin Street, Central Bristol) between 10-10.30am.Camera are to be returned in person to Photographique by 5pm. If you have not been able to finish all topics, your completed subjects will be shown in the exhibition, so please still return the camera.

Entry

There are a limited number of spaces available for this event so Second Look recommends that you book in advance.

Pre paid (before 14th May): £7.00 (SL Members: £5.00)
Payment taken on day: £10.00 (SL Members £8.00)

Rules

One Picture to be taken for each topic
Photographs must be taken in order listed
Space is only available for the first prints; any extra images will not be printed
Prints will all be exhibited as landscape format only
Children Under 14 are recommended to be accompanied by a responsible adult
Copyright of images will remain with the Photographer, however "Second Look" reserve the right to use images for publicity without prior consent
Please take appropriate warm/dry clothing
Photographique will remain the base throughout the day and can be used as a rest point and meeting place to share ideas, ask questions etc
Pre paid places are non-refundable
If taking pictures of children, please ask permission from parent/carer and explain what the event is and where the can see the exhibition

Pictures will be displayed at Photographique on Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th [HTML_REMOVED] Wednesday 20th of May. Further exhibition dates & locations TBC

Well, just after we started, at the bottom end of Corn Street (I think) a bloke rushed past us dropping giant-size chocolate bars from his coat followed by cheering from the shopkeepers - apparently he'd been shoplifting from Tesco.

Also I tried to take a photo of a bus tax disc which had my entry number on it - I was immediately harangued by the driver "you can't take pictures of that!". "I already have" (a bit provocative of me I know). He insisted on phoning his supervisor to check whether it was allowed - which it was. I don't know what the driver thought he could do if it wasn't allowed. So perhaps you should warn people next year to be careful about snapping buses as well as children.

I had a most wonderful day feeling my imagination/observation seriously challenged. It doesn't happen much in life, and it was energising! Some of the entrants were really wonderful.

The sudden downpours spoilt it sometimes, but the challenges were inspired. Thank you for a brilliant day

I wanted to thank you and second look photography for organising the photo marathon event, I had a really great time doing it.

I am a Bristol based photographer, I mainly use digital cameras, it was so refreshing to be using film again. It made me think more about the composition of shot even more so as we could only take 1 shot of the subject. What was frustrating but also funny was the need to shoot the subjects in order, when I was looking to shoot the circles subject I saw a great shot for the reflections subject but when I went back the moment had passed !

The only downside of the day was when my camera broke halfway through the second set of 10 shots apart from that it was a great day. Taking part in the photo marathon has inspired me to do something similar again where I will list 10 items and go out with just my 35mm camera.

I'd just like to say a huge thank you too for my prize!!! My sister Jenny and I both took part in the photomarathon and we had such an amazing day - we each have two little boys, so a day away from them rushing around with cameras was brilliant fun. We were sooo tired by the end of it though - and it took a while before we could see Bristol normally again - everything seemed to be a photo-opportunity for a while!

Unfortunately neither of us could get to the launch party - Jenny was on holiday, and I didn't have a babysitter, so we were amazed and thrilled to find that we'd both won something when we popped into the exhibition this week! It was so interesting to see all the entries - there are a lot of very creative people around (I particularly liked the photos with the collie dog in them). We can't wait until next year!

We found trying to get the photos in order the hardest part of the day! But the image that took the longest for me, was the first one with my ID No. on! My No. was 306 - great, I thought, I just need to find a bus with that number on. Unfortunately there are no buses in Bristol with that number. No problem, I just need to find a Peugeot 306 car! After 20 mins of traipsing around Bristol looking at parked cars, I had the great idea of going to the multi-storey carpark to find one. I was with my two young children, who found it fun going round and round looking for a 306. It was not my lucky day though - there were Peugeot 106s, 206, 406's but no 306's! After about 6 floors, the kids were bored and it seemed that no-one in Bristol had a 306 that they had taken out that day.

It had started to rain again, and we had to hurry to get the other images done, so we could get to 'reflection' and use a large puddle......So, I drew 306 on a wall (in chalk) and took a picture of that.

I said to the kids, as we waited to cross the busy road on the centre - "if I see a Peugeot 306 now, I will scream" - low and behold a 306 went by, which the kids thought was hilarious. Needless to say, I saw about 3 others during the course of the day.

I really enjoyed taking part in the first ever photomarathon in Bristol and I don't think it needs improving. Thank you for a fab day, I belong to a photography club and might put forward the idea for an event at the photography club I belong to. It made me think about what I would take and it got me looking at places in Bristol in a different light. look forward to the next photomarathon. Thank you for a fab day
