Stephen Mason

I started photography in my early 30s with a 35mm SLR in 1982, having been told at school, and having believed all my life, that I had no artistic talent whatever. I soon discovered that other people seemed to like the photos I took but, in spite of being encouraged to do so, I still lacked the confidence to go public with any of them. Joining Second Look is my first step in challenging this life-long reticence.

I moved to compact digital camera in 2005 and to a digital SLR (a Nikon D40) in 2008. My main interest is in unusual views and composition. My favoured subjects are surface textures, shadows, silhouettes, reflections, sunsets and landscape. I also like to explore how complex patterns of lines in 3D reality appear when constrained to a 2D image.

So far I have used only the single lens in the compact camera and the 18-55 kit lens that came with the SLR. I would like to explore other lens options sometime soon. Since I "went digital" I have always prefered to view my photos on my Mac 24" screen but, prompted by joining Second Look, I am now beginning to explore how they look when printed.
